VOX 3 celebrates the grand contribution gay composers have made to music in America. Programmed to coincide with the beginning of Gay Pride Month, National/Pride features the music of Samuel Barber, Jake Heggie, Ned Rorem, and Leonard Bernstein, as well as the poetry of Gertrude Stein and Walt Whitman, among others.
VOX 3 members Ashlee Hardgrave, James Morehead, and Brad Jungwirth are joined by special guest Karen Doerr to perform classical, jazz, and musical theatre highlights of the past century. There are two FREE performances; join us for the premiere at Unity Temple in Oak Park (875 Lake Street) on Saturday, June 5 at 3pm. In Chicago, come to Holy Trinity Lutheran (1218 W. Addison) on Sunday, June 6 at 3pm.
“In recent years, the artistic community has begun celebrating the impact of both individual personalities and diverse communities on works of art,” remarked Artistic Director Brian von Rueden. “Some of the most vibrant musical voices in the last century have been gay Americans, providing fresh inspiration into familiar genres, including works for voice and piano. From the enclave of Jewish New Yorkers who forged an American idiom in 1930s Paris to the men who used music to cope with the devastation of the AIDS epidemic to the fanciful blend of styles emerging from composers today, gay Americans have responded to the world around them with abundant creativity.
