Opera houses and music history books tend to ignore works produced in Germany between Carl Maria von Weber and Richard Wagner. In many ways, however, these years saw a bumper crop of audience-pleasing performances, with charming music and interesting stories. This concert explores the missing generation of German opera, featuring composers Albert Lortzing, Ludwig Spohr, Otto Nicolai, Conradin Kreutzer, and Heinrich Marschner. From the comedy of Zar und Zimmermann to the mystical world of Hans Heiling, VOX 3 members perform scenes and arias from these lost pieces, explaining the developments in politics, stagecraft, art, and harmony in this pivotal time period.
From Weber to Wagner is performed Saturday, January 12 and Tuesday, January 15 at 7:30pm in the 5th floor ballroom at DANK Haus, 4720 N. Western, Chicago. Admission for these two performances is $5. The program also be presented Sunday, January 13 at 3:00pm in the Petty Auditorium at the Skokie Public Library, 5215 Oakton Street, Skokie. Admission for this performance is free.
